Simple answer. Birth control pill contains hormones that will not allow a fertilized egg to implant. Morning after pill will kill an implanted egg.

"The pill" see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oral_contraceptive
"Morning after" see http://ec.princeton.edu/

"Morning after" is considered by most to be abortion.

birth control pill is taken in order to STOP your period, and therefore control the menstrual cycle, protecting you from unwanted pregnancy.

the morning after pill is sometimes given to rape victims as a way to END a potential pregnancy, when no birth control was used. this pill is also requested by women that think they may be pregnant, or had unprotected sex like an idiot, and are looking for a way to end a pregnancy if once exists. it is only recommended in the first few days of pregnancy..where if you were further along you would have to get an abortion.

PLEASE don't listen to these people the Morning after pill of Plan B CAN NOT stop a pregnancy in progress. If you get pregnant the morning after pill will not affect that it only lessens the chance that you will get pregnant. It is made up of hormones like B/C but it's a much higher dose and it makes your fluids thicker which makes it harder for the sperm to swim and fertilize an egg. That's how it works it is only hormones it can not interupt a pregnancy or kill anything.

Quote from actual medication website "Plan B® is not RU-486 (the abortion pill); it will not work if you are already pregnant."

Birth control is a preventative measure it is 97% effective to stop a person from getting pregnant. The morning after pill also has a nickname "the abortion pill" some religious zealot came up with that one, because if you have unprotected sex you can become pregnant and that pill kills whatever egg may have been fertilized. Birth control can be safely taken until you are ready to have kids.

They are different in purpose, usage, and effect.

Day After Pill are used within 72 hours of sexual intercourse to force the female to expunge the fertilized egg (if any) out of the body. It is "pre-abortion" and used after intercourse (and female feels she is pregnant)

Birth Control is where a woman is utilizing pills to control hormone levels and make the female body think she is "pregnant" without a fertilized egg. It prevents ovulation. It is has to be done 1-2 menstrual period being unprotected intercourse. It is not an abortion but a contraceptive
