The "why" is explained thoroughly in any economics book covering developing nations as that of the extra expense it costs a parent to bring a child into the labor force and be productive in what the standard labor market requires. So, 200 years ago a kid was useable labor early in life. Now, raw labor is done by automation or by people in a distant land so kids require 16 years education. Tough to fund that much preparation for very many kids.
Outcome: many subscribe to the idea that a reduction in population is a blessing and all would be cheaper and better. Their position is validated in a way by the preindustrial effect of the black plague on Europe. The plague has even been credited with causing the industrial revolution thanks to the huge demand for labor making the rich elites part with their wealth to the otherwise expendable working class.
In the current economy, this population reduction is frightening for some. Japan was discussed in the Economist two weeks ago, with their chronic population involution. The fear is the reality that their economy will seize to be the formidable presence that it is now, being dwarfed by population heavy nations such as India and China (despite China's own population problem).
Interesting problem. No doubt real estate and education industries will be adversely affected.
One final friendly shot at the Europeans:
Despite our constant guilt in the US about equal opportunity, the US still has the most liberal immigration policies of the developed world, which has supported the "brain drian" from developing countries. This Mexican immigrant issue may be a dodge for US wealthy to gain cheap labor, but non-the less, it does help keep the US as a positive population growth nation. France is also much like this.

Keep the discussion going.

They found out what the cause was for having children and they stopped it.

The economy will be incredibly better in the future. If you have a decrease in population that = an increase in goods which in turn = a decrease in prices.

Supply and demand, less people less demand...

Whites recognized that the main proplem the earth has is overpopulation. Mexicans , on the other hand, are PROUD to be the "fastest growing minority". Blacks think that dropping bastard children all over town is a symbol of manhood.

Because women are having fewer children and having them at a later age. The more educated and secular you are, the less likely you are going to have tons of kids. It's for the better, IMHO.

Birth control. People are having only the number of children they feel they want.

Either they're migrating elsewhere, or there are more deaths than births happening.
