A gentleman is a man who is courteous and thinks of other's needs first. He goes out of his way to be nice to others and to make people around him feel comfortable. When I think of a true gentleman, I picture a true romantic man who truly knows how to treat a woman!!

This is obviously a question of opinion, therefore, I'll give my opinion on what I feel a gentleman should be.

My idea of a gentleman, first and foremost, is a man who does what he says that he will do. If he says that he will call you (business and personally), he calls you. If he says that he will be somewhere at a certain time, you should have no doubt that he will be there. Following through on your commitments is one of the most attractive things that a person can do.

A gentleman does not knock what your interests are, and will not insult you because you are different than them. They actually find the fact that not everyone in this world is the same an area of THEIR interest.

A gentlemen, obviously, holds doors and pulls out seats for not only a lady, but will hold the door for a gentleman behind him.

He will pick up one hundred flyers that a woman or man has dropped in the middle of a grocery store. He doesn't do it because he feels obligated. He does it because he would want it done for him.

A gentleman follows the Golden Rule.

A gentleman is a gentle man, and would never do or say anything that he knows would hurt a man's, lady's, or child's feelings.

Most off, a gentleman is comfortable with himself, and doesn't feel that he has to do something just to impress someone.

He doesn't DO anything that he THINKS would impress someone. He's just being himself.

A gentleman is someone who is pleasant to be around, is kind and helpful to others, and respects others. Just opening the doors for someone isn't the whole idea...

The term "gentleman" used to have a specific definiton that included landowning, education etc. It has changed with use and now has nonspecific connotations of refinement in manners, comportment, education, taste etc. people can, ad do, make their own definitions.

good question - intelligent of you to ask

a gentleman/lady is a superior person

above all, sane

he/she has fully grasped the simple practical hardnosed logic/sanity/good sense of the golden rule - hurting others is hurting yourself - if you can reach them, they can reach you - making enemies is polluting your environment with danger and pain

a gentleman/lady is one who has mastered life - he/she has got above all, or most of, the errors in which people are sunk

he/she doesnt fall for the error of thinking that virtue is ignoring your own needs and serving others exclusively - he/she is as busy looking after him/herself as others ['love others as you love yourself' means look after yourself extremely and look after others extremely]

[and he/she doesnt obey this rule because it is in a book supposedly by god [which would be fallacious and insane] but because he/she sees the good sense in it]

he/she radiates the mental healthiness of caring for him/herself - and this gives love and assurance to everyone he/she meets

a gentleman/lady has mastered the highest spiritual truth - knows from personal spiritual experience that all is one, that he/she is immortal energy or lifeforce, and that he/she merely HAS a body, and that a new body will always be given when the old one breaks down

this of course gives him/her stability, confidence and peace

a gentleman/lady is not a bigot, a fanatic, closeminded, a ready-hater, or any other mentally diseased type

he/she is above ego - knows that the biggest ego is infinitely smaller than the true self - he/she has an ego but it is small and doesnt grow out of control - is stabilised like a goldfish in a bowl

he/she has the spiritual eyes to see that existence itself is the highest pitch of amazing - he/she enjoys this amazingness often
