All DVDs are read only. Nothing you can do about that. But that is not what is causing you to have problems copying the DVD.
If your DVD burning program will not let you copy the DVD, it may have some kind of copy protection on it (all commercial DVDs do). You will not be able to copy it.
If it is a "homemade" DVD, and will not copy, it burner may be having trouble reading it.
You can try making a directory on your hard drive.
Drag and drop all the files from the DVD to the hard drive directory.
Then use your CD/DVD burning software to burn all the files onto a another DVD. (Again, this will not work with commercial DVDs).

get dvdx-copy, or some similar application.
it lets you rip any dvd, and make 1:1 copies of it (exact duplicates). Or, if it's a dvd movie, you can pull out individual chapters, languages, etc.
or, you can use some software to copy the dvd image onto your hdd, so you can make more copies of it
but, basically, you need the software to do it. It can be done, though - as long as the disc has something on it.

Marty most DVD's are read only hence they are called DVD-ROM
(Read Only Memory). This cannot be changed.
What is the error you are getting?

NO, you cannot, unless you buy a second unit. Then you can copy from one to the other.
