We have been evacuated from our home due to the electrical damage and the fact that the ceiling in our bedroom collapsed onto the floor. Thanks for the info!

We own--I'm assuming the other unit owner's insurance will have to foot the bill for us to stay in a hotel, but I'm not sure

If you own, the unit who's pipes did the damage is liable for all damage to your house and any rentals you incur during the 'evacuation.' IF it is a condo, then it is probably the association is liable. Good luck

First of all, do you have insurance? That would be the first order of business. Are you a renter? If you are then the owner has NO responsibility if you are uninsured is my understanding. If you own it like a condo then you call your insurance and they will go after whoever is responsible....

the previous answer is right on the money--also check with your own insurance company--they may cover some of the costs, and will definitely go after the insurance company of who ever owns the upstairs apartment.

Definitely contact your insurance carrier, and the homeowners association. Read through your "Covenants" these will definitely spell out the who the responsible party is, and proceed from there.
