I have seen over and over where people believe that petite means small sizes, (i.e. 0-6), and that "petite women" are short and slim. However, fashion retailers tend to define "petite" as 5'4 or less. Period. Regardless of size. This means you can be a size 18 and still be petite.

Because people just don't understand the use of the word, in fashion that is. I am 5'11, and people say "She's a big girl!" Doesn't mean I'm fat, it means I'm tall.

I do believe petite just means short. Any store you go to, if you go into the petite section, the clothes are made for shorter women. So yes you CAN be a size 18 and be petite, it doesn't refer to size at all. I think it's a common misconception that it means "small" I'm pretty sure it means short in the fashion world!

I'm tall so I have my own dilemmas in fashion. But I had this same discussion with an older lady at a store. She insisted petite meant short waisted.
