Working out will help you build muscle, which weighs more than fat, so yes working out will help.
Adding more calories will help as well. Make sure your calories come from healthy sources of food; such as dairy, lean meats, and fruts and vegetables.
To gain weight you will need to eat more calories than your body burns. Increase your protein intake (meat, peanut butter, eggs, etc.) because your body can not build muscle without protein.
You can also use nutritional supplements (like what you would find at GNC). Whey protein is very good and can often be found in your neighborhood Wal-mart. You can mix it into milk, and it makes great health shakes.
Gaining more than 1-3 pounds a week is not suggested... as it can lead to problems down the road. So don't get discouraged if you aren't gaining as much as you would like. There are websites out there targeted at people who are in the same position as you. I suggest finding some of those and joining a message board. This may help "keep you on track" so to speak. And it always helps to have people to talk to that can identify with your exact concerns.

Eat like you always have, just instead of having a beverage at the dinner table, replace that with a SlimFast or some protein shake. This makes your meals twice as large and will help you gain "good" weight.

Your body produces a lot of thyroxine hormone which speeds up your metabolism. If you try to eat a lot to gain weight it might help a little but could pose another risk of clogging your heart and not gaining weight.(just a guess). It's just hereditary. Eat a good diet and just let it go. Don't eat to gain weight.

Best thing to do is gain healthy weight by working out and doing weights. In order to gain 'healthy weight' and sustain muscle growth, make sure u consume good amounts of protein everyday. U can consume protein bars, protein shakes, protein powder to gain muscle mass which will you give you more shape.
