I'm sorry I can't be specific about Australian/UK travel, but I can offer some advice about USA/UK travel which may be similar. I had occasion to consult a solicitor, and this is what he advised: ALWAYS fly INTO and OUT FROM America on your American passport. Fly into or out of the UK on your British passport. In your case, I should think you would do the same with both passports.

You don't. You use just one of them to go back and forth from the country you originate in. Now, if you are going to a 3rd country, you could use the other passport, but why? I have two myself, but its because I am a dual citizen.

You don't use both at the same time - you need to show your Aus passport when you leave and return to Australia, and use your UK passport to enter and leave the UK. That way you should at least skip the long queues of 'foreign' arrivals.....
