First of all you are going to need some sort of formal training whether it be a art school or a college degree in design and fabrication with some computer assisted design and computer assisted manufacturing courses then you are going to have to find a opening in a company that does custom auto design and fabrication and work your way up through the company. Relocating is a option but may not be necessary at first. If you can put your designs down on paper that is a great start but it would be even better if you could translate your drawings into a 3D model made out plastic or even clay then you are quite ahead of a lot of those who aspire to what you want to do.
