before i answer this question, lets define "white horse." Most "white horses are not white. they are grey. To be "white" a horse must be BORN white. And his skin has to be pink. There is no other way around that. Those are the two qualifications of being a white horse. It is pretty uncommon thing. Sow how come there are so many "white horses"? most of those horses are grey, even though they may be whiter than the snow. A grey horse is born red, brown, black, or a combination of them. He will have white hairs around his nose and/or around his flanks. As the horse grows, he will lose his baby fur and it will be replaced with a dark brown/grey color. Then it will fade to a really dark dapple grey. Then it will lighten to a lighter dapple and finally will become "white". As the horse ages, he may become "flea-bitten". Little spots the color that he was born will appear all over his body. This is normal. My grey Arabian was born a mouse brown and then he lightened up a lo and became a really really dark dapple and then lightened up and finally became flea bitten.

Most grey horses are born black.Although I had one that was a bay when he was born.Just about every foal is born a different color then what their final color ends up being. This can be very frustrating LOL.
As for true white horses, they are called Albino. They are born white to begin with and do not change colors.

True white horses are albinos, which mean they have no colour pigmentation. These horses are born white.

A horse that is born a certain colour and gets lighter over time is a grey, but sometimes, so much colour is gone out that they look white. If you look at the skin of the horse and it is grey, they are actually grey horses, where albinos skin is pink. You can tell if a foal will grey out by looking around their eyes. If the area around their eyes is a grey shade (looks a bit like they are wearing goggles), they will grey out.
