My son was diagnosed almost 10 yrs ago. While there is no cure there is a bunch of stuff to do to help him improve.
1)prayer
2) we heard about the options program and shortly after we were told that it was a bunch of hoooey. But while we were learning about it we did get into his world of isolation. I still think it is extremely effective for the beginning.
3) ABA or Lovaas. It used to be refereed to as Lovaas not that more schools have started to use it, it is called Applied Behavioral Analysis.
4)RDI Relationship Development Intervention. This actually can be used in conjunction with the others. It helps you target the specific deficits better than anything else that I have seen.
Above all else LOVE that child exactly the way he is. If your scared by all this, think of how scary it is for him.

This is an interesting question since the research and the media have reported large increases in the number of cases of autism in the last 5 or so years. There is not a cure for autism, there is behavioral monitoring and modification, as well as medications that can help a little. There is evidence and discussions that suggest that high rates of mercury in the foods we eat contribute to a decline in mental/cognitive functioning and can lead to Autism or other disabilities on the Autism spectrum. Talk with doctors or therapist who specialize in the treatment of autism and where to find the newest research on this.

I don't think autism can be "cured", largely because science still doesn't understand enough about it. But it can be managed. Try Google, find one of the several associations and groups (parents, children, doctors, etc.). I think autistic people can fit in with others if they have good therrapy and IF THEY WANT TO, which is sometimes the greatest challenge. Good luck

People with Autism have a hard time with doing things and are rather confused and blind from the world. You can help them step by step such as for example your 6 year old son cannot eat right help him hold his spoon and show him how to dip it into the soup and eat step by step! Or your 10 year old neighbor you babysit cannot tie her shoes! This might take more time but YOU CAN help teach her how to. Just by helping them as if it is a really fun version of school can make you such a special person in their life. Sometimes they get upset help them deal with those feelings and make them laugh, smile and feel relaxed just like any other child! GOOD LUCK!

I am a parent of an autistic child. Our family is trying the DAN method. DAN stands for Defeat Autism Now. It is using a biomedical approach to treating autism. Go to the DAN website to learn about the DAN approach and to find a DAN practioner.

Autism is a very complex issue and there are many different types of autism on its spectrum. Many are not developmentally disabled at all; in fact, some are quite bright. Others have both social and intellectual disabilities. You may want to google the following: "savant", "Asperers", "autism spectrum" and IBI.
