I'm told the that the resulting melons will not be watermelon but will be influenced by the cucumbers and not be "correct".

Nope, not gonna happen. Plant away. Even IF this rot were true, it would be the plants of the SEEDS of the watermelon that would be effected, not this generation.

GET OUT!!! I had leftover seeds from stuff and I have peppers and cucumbers and potatoes and eggplant all planted within 6 inches of each other. I threw them together in a compost pile. I guess NOW, I have to go pay more attention to them, thank you very much. : )

it would create another breed lol..It's been known to happen
