Everyone question has absolutely no idea what they are talking about. I'm not going to go into too much more detail, but emo does not mean emotional. Emo is not Fall Out Boy, Good Charlotte, Simple Plan, Hawthorne Heights, Dashboard Confessional, etc. They are pop bands nothing more. You don't listen to emo, and I'm willing to bet that you never have. Emo is style of hardcore music that is short for emotive hardcore. It originated in Washington D.C. It is widely regarded that the bands Rites of Spring, Embrace, One Last Wish, and few others started it in the mid 80's. Rites of Spring being one of the best and most well known. They took their music in a more personal direction with a far greater sense of experimentation. Emo bands aren't on major record labels either. Emo is anti-corporate. It's what defined the bands, and it's what still defines those bands today. You will never find an emo band on Vagrant, Geffen, Drive-Thru, etc. Those bands aren't emo, and never will be.

Traditionally, Emo is short for emotional hardcore, or emotional punk. Now it's kind of a word for music that's very emotional. The first band to be labeled emo was Rites of Spring, which featured future members of the band Fugazi.
Current emo bands include AFI, Jimmy Eat World, The Alkaline Trio, Thursday, Thrice, Matchbook Romance, and My Chemical Romance. Fans of emo dress mostly in black and look like a mix between goth and punk, and often have hair like the guys from Flock of Seagulls (I don't know why, but they do).

Emo (from emotional) is a slang expression used to describe a range of fashion styles and attitudes somewhat affiliated with emo music and its related scenes. The word "emo" may be used as a noun to identify a member of the emo scene, as an adjective to describe a certain style of fashion or music, or even to describe a state of experiencing unhappiness, loneliness, depression or melancholy (to feel "emo").

It originated as a form of music coming out of the grunge period in the mid 90's. It was more focused on feelings and wasn't as heavy and agresive as other forms of music. Some of the first emo bands were Fugazi, At The Drive-In, and The Pixies. Emo has now been marred and lost amongst angsty kids who hang around the mall too much.

Short for "emotional." Emo is a broad title that covers a lot of different styles of emotionally-charged punk rock.

I hate defining what music is or isn't though. Many people involved in Emo tend to be stuck up about music, but I personally just listen to whatever I like. I don't always listen to mainstream, but I wouldn't have a problem if a song I like did become popular.

Emo is short for emotional. Go here http://emosong.ytmnd.com/
You are Emo! You like to think you are non-conforming even though you are. You paint your nails and use tons of makeup and dye your hair. You don't really have any problems, you just make them up because you are an attention whore. Your only life is located online. You f*cking loser, you kill yourself with safety scissors.
I got that as a quiz result.

EMO DOES NOT STAND FOR EMOTIONAL!!! Emo does not decribe people, it discribes a genre of music. Emo is a shortened version of emocore which is short for emotional hardcore.
Anyone that labels themselves Emo, are not emo.

Someone told me that emo is similar to goth due to the dark clothing...the guys wear their hair longish (black) usually combed over their eyes and wear tight straight-legged pants. Girls look similiar. The music they listen to is angst-ridden, they write poetry about being depressed or suicide. Sounds like a really rip-roarin' group of fun people.
