Perform all your duties in an exceptional manner and be well liked by your colleagues and your efforts will likely get noticed by management. If a higher position opens up and you fit the qualifications for the job, then there is no reason why you should not be considered for it. Of course, you should get along with your superiors but this does not mean you need to be a butt kisser.

The obvious things are being outstanding at your job, being punctual and being reliable -- but you're probably doing all that already.
If there is a promotion available, and you feel you are qualified, don't wait for someone to be struck by lightening and connect you and the promotion. Tell your supervisor you are interested, and tell him or her why you think you are qualified. You may not get it this time, but at least your supervisor knows you are interested and will consider you for the next one.
It's surprising how many people don't want promotions -- they're happy in a rut -- and supervisors don't usually go out on a limb. If you look like someone who's content to do what you are doing for the next twenty years, then you'll likely be left to do it. So make a few waves. Show a little initiative. If you can find a way to do things better, or think some small innovation might make the work easier, ask your supervisor if you can give it a test.
That isn't butt kissing. That's being a great employee, and showing you have potential for greater things. like promotions.
good luck!

You don't have to kiss butt. Do your job well, be personable, but not over friendly. Have good work ethics (be on time, don't abuse breaks, don't use the phone alot, be available to help others). Having the right attitude is always a plus.

It really depends what kind of boss you have. It depends if your boss values the results of your assignments or being able to present the idea in a meeting. The next time he does your Performance Evaluation, don't be shy, and ask him what he expects from you.
I have had first hand experience with 2 types of bosses, and trust me if I could have known to simply ask it would have saved me alot of hard work. Just remember...sometimes its not what you know, but who you know.
Also, if you made a lot of progress for the company, don't hesitate to remind your boss how much $$$ you have saved the company. Don't give the kind of attitude that you are trying to ask mommy for lunch money. But just be more assertive about explaining your accomplishments.

Nobody kisses butt to get ahead in the corporate world, it's most effective to either give head, toss salad or do both...

work hard and use common sense. Become irreplaceable. The more you know your job, the more power you actually have over your superior. Bottom line. Do your job the best you can, preferably better than your boss.

Wellllll, you could try doing morew than you are required to do, take initiative, make the business run smoother and more profitably for your boss. Bosses notice people who do that; one day those people are the bosses.
