i took this test(maybe a little bit dubious)and got a score of 143.i told my girlfriend and she just laughed!

The IQ test is designed so that "average" is 100. This means that the test actually changes throughout the decades to ensure that 100 is average. This is because the test is meant to be comparative, with everybody falling on a bell curve, meaning most people are in the middle (at 100) and you have fewer and fewer people on either end.
However, IQ tests aren't necessarily a measure of how "smart" someone is. There are different kinds of intelligence, and there is also evidence that standard IQ tests are biased towards some people. There's a surprising amount of controversy about it.

The average IQ of the general public is somehow close to their shoe sizes. Just kidding. Generally, the average is 85-100. Bright is 101-140. Genius is over that. However, I have difficulty with numbers given for IQs, as I really don't think IQ scores measure anything more than one's ability to complete an IQ test.

100 is the median I.Q.
I've taken on-line IQ tests and gotten scores from 93 to 153. I am sure my actual I.Q. is somewhere in that range. LOL.
On t'other hand, I did get into MENSA based on my old SAT score.
