I'm in the Uk, and given things like Gulf War syndrom( and the governments total ignoring of this problem), the Deepcut barracks incident, and issues about giving them the proper equipment, I would actively discourage anyone from joining the military.
Why risk your life for your country when your country obviously doesn't give a **** about you?

The military is still comprised of the most heroic people in the country.
Mo matter what type of foe they face, they're still defending the freedoms of the country, so no, it's not losing its appeal.
And maybe gather a fact or two. I wouldn't say the terrorists are weak and I wouldn't say it's not a struggle. And it has nothing to do with saddism. Are you purposefully demeaning the men and women of the military? Or are you just dense?

I don't know which country's military forces you're referring to, but I think generally the international media gets carried away with too much coverage of armed conflicts. I wonder how many terrorist acts and war crimes would be committed if the perpetrators couldn't count on real-time video graphics to help dramatize events that don't need dramatization. Another way the media unwittingly contributes to hostility and misunderstanding is by frequently spreading unsubstantiated "information" about the alleged misdeeds of military personnel. Of course, it's not the first time in world history that news reporters have misled the public.

The US Military are having major recruitment problems. The volunteer Army is inadequate - so the USA has to send the National Guard to Iraq for more that one tour of duty. Many of the National Guard soldiers, when they signed up, never dreamed that this would happen to them. The USA is so stretched in Iraq which encourages Iran, Syria, and North Korea to
pull the Eagle's feathers.

Enlistment in the U.S. is at an all time high (voluntary)...Young people are sick and tired of being beaten into wimps by liberal groups telling them they have to be tree hugging environmentalists, gay, metrosexuals, etc. Young men and women want to be just that...young men and women. They want to protect their country, and fight to make it happen. 911 pissed alot of people off, but the liberals in this country continually bombard us with negatism, and how we should "understand" why they killed 3000+ of our countrymen
