Thought requires effort... Think about it!

NOW, the longer answer...

"Common sense" meant, when the term was coined, "Wisdom that is freely available to anyone who chooses to draw on it." At that time, "Common" meant freely shared and available to all, not necessarily something possessed by most if not all people. In the modern sense of the word, frankly (that is frequently, if not invariably, seen in the situation in context), it has never been common...

The bottom line is that more often than not, people just react to the situation without applying what wit they have. Sometimes this is good: if I'm in front of a rapidly approaching 18 wheeler, don't spend a lot of time computing velocity vectors, impact forces and all that rot--yell at me to get out of the way! I'm sure you can think up oodles of other scenarios where acting without thinking is perhaps wisest. Alas, too many people act without thinking most or all of the time--independent of their intelligence, I might add. This is easier, in the short run, and it avoids the risk of failing to act quickly enough, even though it courts the inescapable risk of acting too quickly.

Why, then? Because on the whole, people are too lazy, and don't really recognize the need to think in certain situations.

You say potatoe, I say patatoe!
We are all different and what seems to be of "common sense" to you or me, is not always the same to the other He's and She's of the world.
Because there are more and more people (Pop. explosion in the World) contributing to the interpretation of the understanding of common sense, the perameters of what it is to use common sense are expanding exponentially.
When 10 people agree on something that's fine. But is it easier to get 1000 people to believe the same way?
I have found that the more people there are involved, the more interpretations there are to quibble about. Outside of the waste of time and energy of it all ...in the long run it may be a better thing to have common sense expanded upon. Who knows!?

People still run out of rooms when there's a fire, don't they? The demise of common sense has been exaggerated. That said, I think the main thing contributing to lack of common sense is the whole idea of no win, no fee lawyers. So people will do anything to sue someone or to avoid being sued because they can sue each other and not lose anything. That's how you end up with people deliberately spilling coffee on themselves so they can sue because they weren't told it was hot.

some people just don't recognize the stupid things they do that people around them notices because there's a possibility that they done these things everyday that it doesn't make them think it's stupid or he/she doesn't think before they act and do it right away resulting in very bad effects.

I believe we have taught our children - and other people - NOT to think. Parents tell their children what to think, what to do, how to act, what to say.... People are actually taught to no longer think for themselves.

It's pathetic, I know.
