Well, Mishy....the reality is that black women fail to make black men accountable for their actions. While the woman above would have you believe that this is a cross-racial problem---statistics actually do show that there are more absentee fathers that are black. (USA).
While 'holding them accountable' is part of the issue---I think that prior to that mate choice is really the heart of the issue---and even prior to that, instilling young black women with a greater sense of value in themselves is so vitally important!! A woman who values herself is less willing to 'settle' for being knocked up and left to raise a child alone-----she will get herself educated and break the cycle of illegitmacy and poverty that so plagues the black community.
If you have not, try reading up on some of the things that Bill Cosby has said about the Black Community----these things (ideas I am putting forth) come from WITHIN the Black Community....not from 'us white folk'......
God Bless!

Ok- to begin- I'm white. So I won't pretend to know what it is like to be accepted in or to be apart of the black culture. But I will say this- and feel free to call me a jerkface- but I believe that this norm is passed down through the media. Mostly America Media- like news channels, the arts (music, film, what not).. and so on and so forth. It seems to me that the North American Culture tries to scare different religious, cultural groups against each other. It has been know for years that certain groups have been held down on purpose so that those in power will retain power (and being Irish I have this part of North American glory in my family tree!!! SOld into slavery when they first came over to a 'freeland'). I feel that by keeping certain groups uneducated that that is a way to keep them from moving up the socail ladder- sort ta speak. But I must run. Let me know what u think!!! (so much more to say in such little time!!!) Let me just add: LETS ALL ******* UNITE!!!

I don't think that it's only the norm in black culture, it pertains to all races. Not to mention, society has evolved and people don't adhere to the same beliefs as they did in the past. Before, if a woman had a child out of wedlock, she was sent to a home for unwed mothers where she remained until the birth of her child. Once the child was born he/she was placed for adoption. Depending on what beliefs are instilled in you as a child, it's not necessarily "accepted", just a sign of the times.

The same reason public education is a shambles. Teachers teach to the "lowest common denominator" that is they teach to the slowest kids. Kids will do whatever is easy that society accepts-in this case illegitimate children. This problem is NOT solely an issue in the Black Community.

Traditionally, black people in the USA were very family oriented. Liberal federal government programs, such as welfare, are largely at fault. If a woman is not married and has children, she gets support from the government. If she is married and lives with her husband and children, they do not qualify. If you want to take advantage of the system, you use the loop holes.
I do not agree that "accepted" is the right word. "Tolerated" might be a better choice of words.

It's not just the "black culture" where it's accepted. Look around you, all races face the same issue.

In all actuality, this occurs in all cultures of society. Most just keep it on the low down. It's not the norm in black culture as you may read about,or see on television,or what your relatives& friends may tell you.Let's think outside the box okay?

It is becoming more accepted because society as a whole no longer blames the victim, in this case the illegitimate child. It isn't the child's fault, so treating him as an outcast is unfair.

People in general just don't keep their pants on any more. Slowly it became more socially acceptable to go all the way before marriage and now not a lot of people wait.
And also, people just don't know what a condom is, I guess.

The lack of stable parents (loving mothers and fathers) resulting in them uses media (rap culture) to teach themselves what normal behavior is.
