Modern monarchs are just figureheads of nations for the most part.

Because different places have different forms of government. Though, in some places (England) the monarchy is merely figurehead (the queen, I believe- and correct me if I'm wrong, Brits- has a limited amount of power, and parliament controls the day to day running of things), other places maintain their monarchies or dictatorships because that is the govenrment there. Not everyplace can be a democracy...

Having a king or queen as head of a country is a legitimate form of government.

It's mostly tradition and important for and national morale. If the monarchy is part of a culture it is hard to disband it completely although the royals may not be making any political decisions themselves.

Tradition. Also, in England, it helps our tourist trade if people think they are coming to London to see a real Queen.

They'd don't necessarily reign in their country these days, some do. They are more symbols of their country. Kind of like how the American Flag symbolizes America, well some Monarchs can symbol other's countries.

Mostly as figureheads, not actual "leaders" or policy makers. Although some are actual rulers, many of those cultures have existed that way for centuries, and they like it that way.

Maybe they just want to keep the tradition going. They might feel having presidents and Pm's are ineffective.

though they actually have no "real" power they still head the nation and are seen by their people as the head figure. they dont do much anything but look good. they do though have the ability to pardon people and are admitted into most anything
