My engine cooling fan runs intermittently after the car is turned off. It will run for just a few seconds, then stop or it will run for a couple mintues, then stop and then start up again. What should I check for and/or replace?

The engine in your car has what is called a transverse-mounted engine, meaning it is set in the engine compartment sideways, and there can be no engine-powered fan. That means that there must be electric fans to move air through the radiator when the car is idling and not moving. The fans are controlled by sensors that monitor engine coolant temperature. As the coolant temperature fluctuates, the fans turn on and off with a relay to keep the coolant at a constant temperature. These fans are designed to turn on and off even with the ignition off. Here's why. After you turn the engine off, the coolant temperature tends to rise, because it is sitting in the hot engine block and not circulating through the radiator. This can cause the coolant to boil and either come out through the overflow tank and be lost, or at least create vapor pockets in the cooling system. Both conditions can cause overheating. The fans come on even with the engine off to prevent this. If the fans stay on indefinitely, however, you have a problem with the relay and/or the sensor(s). The fans will kill your battery the same as if you leave the lights on. The fact that they come on and off intermittently for a while is good. They're supposed to stop coming on after the coolant temperature drops below the sensor's preset level. They turn on and off intermittently because when you shut the engine off the coolant temperature rises, then gets cooled by the fan, then rises again because there's so much heat in the engine block.

It has a temperature detector that switches te fan on. Seems to be working wrong, it is easy to change and not expensive.
