Its a goverment directive so that when the police raid your house they can smash the door in and run straight upsatirs and use the loo as they have been stuck in a van around the corner watching your house for ages and need a p*ss.

My stairs dont fece my front door but my bathroom is at the top of the stairs...
My only answer for this would be... practicality.
The last thing you need when your down stairs and suddenly need the loo is to run around the house finding the right room

I have lived in about 10 houses and this is the first one with the stairs facing the front door. The bathroom is directly above the front door so that bit doesn't fit with your theory.

Not sure on the stair thing though the bathroom being upstairs away from the kitchen sounds like a good idea to me.
I'll just cook tea while my hubby takes a dump and stinks the kitchen out, not to mention if you have guests and they need to do No2 and everyone in the lounge or kitchen hears them go . . . plop . . . PLOP!

I don't know. According to all the Feng Shui books I've read it is bad "Chi" to have the stairs directly facing the front door.

It's a layout that works! Why change something that doesn't need changing? Also saves on the cost of drawing new plans for every house!

Not all homes are built that way...my parent's home has the stairway off to the side and the upstairs bathroom is down the hall!

So sleepwalkers don't fall down the stairs and people can't be nosey outside.
