Make sure you are using the right size. Read the insert directions. The main thing is to RELAX, if you tense up your vaginal muscles, it will make it uncomfortable.
This site had some really good info on all sorts of stuff:
http://www.coolnurse.com/index.htm
Here is another site to show you how to insert one the right way:
http://www.beinggirl.com/en_US/pages/goods_tampinsert.jsp
You do bleed even in the water. I wouldn't reccomend going
swimming on your period without using a tampon.

No, it shouldn't hurt. And yes, you DO bleed in water, and even more after you get out.
Be sure to point the tampon toward the small of your back. Use the smallest ones you can buy, and dip the tippy end in a little vaseline. (Or put the vaseline-only a little-where the tampon is going.)
Relax, and once it's in, make sure to push it sorta deep, to keep the muscles at your opening from feeling like something is there. If you do feel that, just push it a little deeper.
Most girls have to try a number of times before it's comfortable, but most of us get it eventually! If it hurts a lot, perhaps you have a nearly intact hymen. Your doc can check and even fix that if you like, but it's hardly worth a visit for a pool party!

It hurt my first dozen or so times. I later figured out it was because I was inserting them at the wrong angle. They kept hitting my vaginal wall, instead of going up. Try aiming the tampon towards the small of your back.

Yes, it hurts a little, but not as much as you might think. Perhaps try using a little tiny bit of Vaseline.

It will hurt very badly if you put it in at a wrong angle.. Have you tried using pads. I know they feel gross but at least they don't hurt.
