For Windows 98 or Windows ME, go with 128MB. For Windows 2000 or Windows XP, get the max that your motherboard will take.
Check out your model computer at http://www.coastmemory.com It will tell you how much came with your computer, how many slots it has and what the maximum size is. They happily accept returns through their RMA program if it does not work.
Keep in mind that some motherboards require that memory be in identical pairs. So you might have to chuck the old memory and FILL up to maximize it.

More RAM is almost always a good thing, but 512 MB is probably a suitable amount.

Depends on how many memory slots you have and what the manufacturer says it's upgradeable to. Find out and then put in the maximum your manufacturer says it can handle.
