I would ask him, also he may have family traditions or something. There are many different African traditions, however I doubt cake would traditionally be included. A baby shower is an American tradition also. Just ask him if he would like his heritage marked in any way.

If he's African, you'll have to ask him about the observations not only in Africa (a pretty big place!), but his particular country. Of course, that would spoil the surprise.
I'd go with American traditions, such as baking a lovely cake and tying pink mylar baloons on the mailbox.

Are you aware that Africa is the biggest continent in the world, comprising many cultures, religions and countries? 'African traditions'? No. Particular traditions to parts of Africa, sure, plenty. I wouldn't try to do anything unless you can tell the difference - just get him a cake that you'd like.. that's probably why he's asking you anyway. You clearly don't know anything of his culture.

Is this kid being born in America? Then Africa be damned. Is she white? Try American traditions of birth to a child. If you want African ways then I suggest moving to that country. Your brother too.

The only one I know for sure is that when they have the baby the mother eats the placenta because it's full of nutrients.
