I have lived here my whole life and it's great. Go to the waterfront and walk up and down. There are cool little shops like the Ye Ol Curiosity Shop, Great food like Ivars and great access to the Pike Place Market. The Space Needle is located at the Seattle Center. The rides are small, but there is a Science Center and Imax if you are interested in that, if the 12yo like science, dinosaurs etc they will love the Science Center.

You should contact a tour desk at a hotel. There is this really cool map that they can give you that has attractions listed on the back. I work in the travel industry and I always use this map for my clients in Seattle. Here are some more things.

Experience Music Project (206) EMP-LIVE
Pacific Science Center (206) 443-2001
Ride the Duck Seattle City Tour (206) 441-DUCK
GameWorks Arcade located on 7th and Pike
Woodlawn Park Zoo in Greenwood
Waterfront Aquarium on the Waterfront
Museum of Flight (206) 764-5720
You can get ticket packet for most of these attrations together at a discounted price www.goseattlecard.com
Or get a city pass for about $36 you get tickets to
Museum of FLight
Pacific Science Center
Aquarium
Harbour Cruise
and the Zoo ask for it at one of these places. It's a good deal

If you are restricted to the downtown area, the two major tourist areas are Pike's Market (downtown at the waterfront) and Seattle Center (Lower Queen Anne). They are about 10 blocks apart and getting to and from is a little difficult due to the fact that the monorail is down. What I would recommend is taking a cab or a bus.

Sights to see at Pike's market are the Salmon toss, the first Starbucks, or small local shops. There is also a lot of food here.

Main sights to see at Seattle Center are the Space Needle, Experience Music Project (EMP, a music museum), or IMAX. This area has a lot of things to do for kids. What might be fun is take a land/water tour on "Ride the Ducks". This is next to EMP.

If you are willing to venture out of the city and want less touristy things to do, a ferry ride to Bremerton or Bainbridge Island is fun and beautiful, a tour of the Boeing factory in Everett might be fun too. There is also the Ballard Locks.

Make sure to go to Pike's Place Market. There is also something called Eperience: Musice Project. It is so cool. It costs a bit to get in, but it is like an interactive music museum. The Space Needle is a little overrated, they have this nasty little carnival thing there. I wouldnt spend too much time, except to maybe actually go up the needle, which costs. There's a restaurant at the top. There is also great shopping, interesting little ma and pa restaurants, (lots of vegetarian and vegan food) Lots of independent coffee places, A cool place in the U district (By the university) is called Bubbles of Joy, they sell Bubble Tea, it is like a smoothie with tapioca "bubbles." Kinda fun. Oh, and if you look it up or ask around and find it, you have to go to the Arboretum. It is like a huge green garden where you just go and hike/walk through trails-its got every plant and tree native to washington. It is beautiful. Anyway, hope this helps. And all these things are family friendly.

The seafood is unbelievable. Try the Crab Pot on the Piers, they serve you by the ton in a very relaxed setting. On Saturdays and Sundays you MUST go to Salty's on Alki Beach for the Brunch, which includes seafood, carving station, great desserts and a spectacular view of Puget Sound and the Seattle skyline.
Pike Place Market is nice to visit, there's something for everyone.
Go to Boeing and take the plant tour, it's breathtaking to see how fast they assemble a huge airplane.
Take a tour to San Juan Islands, Mt. Rainier and Mt. Helens. And ride the Spirit of Washington, the dinner train.
Have a nice trip...

Lots of things, the Museum of Flight, Woodland Park Zoo, a Mariner's game, a Seahawks game, the Seattle Center, the Burke museum. There are several parks around, Discovery is a nice one. You can visit Komo tv studios and watch Northwest Afternoon as it's broadcast on tv.
