It all depends on the type of wood and the weather conditions.
If the wood is bare (no previous stain or paint) then the wood will absorb the stain very fast and you may need to reapply for even color and coverage.
If the weather is too hot then it will also dry too quick and you may have uneven coverage. This also applies in conditions that may be too cold, but will dry slow in some areas than others.
Most stains and latex paints under average conditions can cover 200-400 feet.
Test an area first and then go from there.
At the hardware store/lumber yard I work at we always allow people to bring back stain/paint if they bought too much, provided it is not a custom mix color. If in that case we say start with two gallons and proceed from there.
Hope that helps :)

Try a pump-up sprayer, and lindseed oil. This is cheaper and will give you the same effect and protect your fence.

Depends on whether your spraying it on, or whether you use a brush or roller.
Spray will go longer, but you get deeper stain with brush.

Usually it will tell you on the back of the can how much you need per cubic foot or how much "approx." this can will cover.
