Anyone who says "turn it in to the police" is a chump. There was a kid that found $10,000 a few years ago in Fort Wayne. He turned it in to the police. (Obviously it was drug money, but that's not the point). He thought that if no one claimed it he'd get it back. The police, though, won't give it back if no one claims it. They KEEP IT! This is blatant theivery, which goes to prove that cops are crooked. Anyhow, there was so much furor in the press over it that the police department pretty much had to give it to the kid in order to shut up the public.
Moral of the story.....if you give it to the police and they don't find a rightful owner, you don't get it, they steal it and you're a chump.

Probably wait around awhile to see if anyone was moaning about losing one. Then after awhile I'd probably clandestinely check around to see if anyone was missing any diamonds. Eventually I'd be like "finders keepers". I'd try to check for an honest owner first, and give it back to them if at all possible.

Personally I would turn it in to the police. Because it could be a family heirloom that doesn't have a lot of monetary value but a lot of sentimental value. Put yourself in the person who lost its place wouldn't you hope that the person who found was honest enough to turn it in.

Turn it over to the police and wait to see if it is claimed by anybody. I know, I am lame , but I really can't deal with guilt very well.

I'd ask for legal advice from a lawyer. It wouldn't cost me anything because there are several in my family.
Probably take him/her out for a nice dinner.
