I am about to get engaged to a Mexican woman that I met over the internet, and have met in person several times in Mexico, and she has come to my home in Canada once. She speaks no english, but my spanish is pretty good.

A relationship that develops over the distance, especially international differences is different from a regular relationship. Some of my friends and family think I am crazy, but of course, they are not me, and neither have they ever married a foreigner.

I would greatly appreciate hearing about some of your experiences in marrying a foreign spouse that speaks a different language, and how your relationship has developed, and finally, do you think you made a good choice.

Thanks very much!

Todd

Not myself personally, but there was this truly inspiring real life tale of a gymnast from China who moved to Switzerland after marrying a Swiss Girl. His name was Donghua Li i think. probably a bit off topic - but the point was they stuck together he was in a foreign place times were tough, but he ended up winning the Gold Medal at the Atlanta Olympics...take from that what you will :)

There may be just a possibility that she is using you to get to Canada. And then maybe not.
But
do not let your emotions take over the decisions you are about to make.
Just because you have met her several times does not mean you really know her.
Marriage is a serious commitment and a legal and binding contract. Of course until you get a divorce.
Can you bring her over on the Fiance Visa . If you do all of the paperwork it may take up to a year for her to come to Canada.
Also in the process of bringing her over you will have to do an affidavit of support so she cannot be a public charge to the government you may then be held responsible for her financiallyif you do get divorced
My own unique situation did not work but I am wiser and wished that I would had listened to my family.
Wishing you the best in whatever you decide.

I went with someone who was foreign. It was difficult. He was here in the States, and he always struggled with being here instead of Europe. They have their roots, and get very homesick sometimes. I thought about moving there, but decided I could never move so far away from my home, the U.S. He had different ideas of what women are, and their customs were very different. It's very difficult to do, if there's a way to spend time together more than you have, it's important enough to do it so you can be sure you'll get along.
Being together all the time is so much different than being together just a little bit. Being together is way different than writing on the internet. The more time you can spend together the better, and it's a good investment.

I did.. I left my home, job, family and friends to follow my husband (we were married 17 years). I did speak his language well though. There are times when living abroad was difficult for me because of the homesickness (mostly the food, no internet at the time) and there are additional things that you will have to deal with, but they're minor.. such as getting your professional qualifications and certifications translated. In hindsight, the most difficult thing was that by living in another country and adopting their culture and language, I sometimes felt that I didn't have enough contact with my own countrymen/women and missed speaking my own languge with just random people.
Did I make a good choice? Yes. Although we are divorced now, we still respect each other and get along very well as friends. Sometimes overcoming obstacles such as language and culture can make a relationship stronger. Best of luck to you both.
