Not as in real stupidy, but it's common for people to hide at least some of their intelligence. It used to be very common for women, who did not want to appear to be smarter than a man.

It's still a good strategy in negotiation. It's like not showing all your cards at once.

It takes more intelligence, and confidence, to be able and willing to hide your intelligence.

Oh gosh amighty, I knew you'd find out. I'm just not going to answer this stupidity question, then you'll never know that I have no smarts.
Uh Oh, I think my sarcasm is coming back, hold on a second.
there,all gone...
Now I can pretend I have intelligence if only in my own stupid,I meant smartalecky mind.

I think it is common for certain people to hide behind stupidity. I am woman and I have seen other women do this. Some people are afraid to let their intelliegence show, they do not want to seem competitive or "bitchy". I am not saying it is just women either. I think some men "dummy themselves down". I would say in certain situations it might be the best move, alot of people are intimidated by intelligence. If you are trying to communicate with someone who is easily intimidated by "smart people", then it might be best to "dumby down" for them.

yes, its a good strategy when necessary but takes some intelligence to pull it off. I don't recommend it for that reason in general because it can be hard to break out of the role later.

If I don't trust, or don't like a person, I go into 'dippy' format. There's no reason they should know who I truly am - only my friends know that. It means I get to bumble along, with people letting me get off things; like that train conductor who tried to charge me for taking my cello on the train, but it means that my friends know who I am. I'm happy that way.

Many times yes. To either hide manipulation or insecurity.

Lots play dumb to avoid work or to get men to do our bidding. But it's hard to fake stupid. Bluffing, now that's just being creative.

Lots of people do that... I had a student once, she was blond, and since everybody had labeled her as a dumb blond, she acted that way, but she was really smart, and didn't want anyone to know.
