It depends on the exhaust pipe. While some, who obviously don't know, assume that the bikes are loud because the baffles have been removed, the truth is, most aftermarket pipes are designed to enhance the sound, create less restriction and improve performance. My Vance & Hines StraightShots are street legal ( not designated for "off-road use only" ) and still have the original baffles installed. My bike however, is VERY LOUD because that's how I WANT IT ..... I really don't give a sh*t about what ANYONE else thinks about my bike, what it looks like or what it sounds like. MY BIKE, MY WAY.
If you want to go out and play your "obnoxiously loud" music, in your little car with a resonator exhaust TIP ( that makes your car sound like a chainsaw ), thinking about how "cool" you think you look. Thats YOUR business, you bought it because you like it and, as stupid as I think it looks and sounds, its my opinion. But, people like you seem to want everything to be THEIR way and some may give in to that. I, on the other hand will tell you to take your crybaby, whiney as$ opinion about how my loud pipes "disturb" you and stick it up your as$ cause, my bike will always be the way I WANT IT and, if you ( or anyone else ) doesn't like it ..... Take another road, keep your windows rolled up, or stay home.

Because there are thousands of violent, but controlled explosions inside the combustion chamber each minute.
This is why it is called an internal combustion engine.
Brainiac,
Here's a suggestion;
Put some gasoline and air inside a close container and add spark to it. Pretty loud eh? Now if you can imagine, this happens continuously within an engine.... it's what makes cars, trucks buses, lawn movers, and yes, even motorcycles go.

People take the mufflers off. Its allowed so that bikes can drown out that god-awful low rider jungle music, at red lights.

Harleys are made to operate at a certain pitch and tone, they are designed that way, and it is part of why many people own them...for the sound.

Because their owners choose to make them that way, by modifying their stock pipes or buying louder ones.

People do this to act cool, but to me it's really stupid. I don't know why it's allowed because it's disturbing the peace.
