I'm in the UK and my broadband provider is wanadoo. I currently have a 512k broadband connection on my main computer using the broadband modem that was supplied by wanadoo.

I recently bought another computer and I have a spare broadband modem left over from an old ISP I used to be with. Can I use this spare modem to set up my new computer in another room on my current wanadoo broadband? There is a phone socket in the other room so I don't see why there should be a problem.

The main difficulty I've had trying to do it is I don't know how to configure the spare modem to work on my current broadband service. It came with a different ISP and the installation programme on the cd for it sets up a connection for the old ISP. I don't want this, I want both my computers to share my current ISP subscription. Can anyone lead me through the steps to configuring my spare modem on my new computer for my current ISP?

In regards to two ADSL modems on a single line, the answer is no. Due to the way ADSL works using the spare space in your phoneline a second ADSL modem would interfere(pretty much the same as when not using filters on your phone lines), which would mean that you would get cut off whenever either modem tried to send information.

Your only real option is to get a router, of which there are various wireless options. Main brands i'd recommend would be Linksys or Netgear. A side note for wireless networking is that it will require a wireless adapter on each computer you wish to use, although some wireless routers come with one included.

Get a router and set up a network like that (i.e. Plug the modem into the router, then plug both computers via LAN cards to the router). The chances are that you're plan won't work, the modems are identified on the system by unique IDs called MAC Addresses and your connection will only talk to a modem with the right MAC address. Even if you could somehow get both modems to use the same MAC address, which I doubt, I'm still not sure if it would work since you might have Wanadoos Servers go nuts making them try to treat two seperate modems as if they were the same one.

There are much better ways of achieving internet access for multiple PCs - the best option would be to get a router or better a wireless router. Means you can have access anywhere. As for your setup - all you need to configure on modem is username and password. Which Wanadoo should provide. And depending on the modem itself other things like VCI and VPI settings etc - but that is usually the same regardless of ISP. Although you may need to check if you can have two different modems accessing the same account at the same time. Best advice: Get a router to connect more than one PC to net :)

simple answer,get a router/modem p.c 1 install the router software,configure it(i.e usb or ethernet) p.c 2 install router software again
most routers have 4 or more ports now so you can have more and more computers connected, and alot of people are connecting x-box,s and ps2,s so they can play live, this is all possible through a single router,bt(british telecom) have just brought out a hub?router with 10 avalible ethernet ports ,but with the rise in internet phones(skype) we are going to need more and more
i currently have 2 p.c,s running off a bt voyager 205,but this router is 2 years old,and that is a eternity in todays technology
good luck

Is this 2nd modem one that plugs into a laptop? If so, you can create an ad-hoc network on your laptop. Then enable "allow other computers to share internet" You should be able to connect to it with your other computers, but you'll need your laptop on.

No, you should get a Router. I recommend LinkSys. Follow the instructions to connect your first computer. Then add your 2nd computer.

You will also be able to share files and printers though your local network.
