com is a generic top-level domain (gTLD) used on the Internet's Domain Name System. It was one of the original top-level domains, established in January 1985. It is currently operated by VeriSign. It is consistently pronounced as a word, dot-com, and has entered the common language this way; in contrast, though some of the other TLDs are also sometimes pronounced as words, they're also frequently spelled out instead, something that is never done with .com.

These all came from the original Top Level Domains (TLD's) these are things like .com, .org, .gov, .mil, .co.uk.
.com = commercial
.org = non-for-profit organization (not so much anymore)
.gov = U.S. Governmental Body
.mil = U.S. Military
.edu = Accredited educational instituion
.net = network
and so on and so forth.
Newer .tv, .us, .cc are new TLD's and are TLD's for foreign nations.

COMpany. EDUcation. The tricky one is .TV because it doesn't mean television, it is a server name based in some small country in the pacific rim.

it's commercial.
.org is for "organization"
.biz is for "business"
.gov is for "government"
.info is for "information"
These are just some other examples of domains. in reality, they mean nothing and most of the publicly available ones are available to register.
