one is supposed to change the air filter every so many miles. therefore, this depends on your date of purchase of filter... or how much your drive, and where! (desert, woods, humid..etc). if you don't change the filter, your engine will not breath well and it will run poorly...loooong time use of 1 bad filter will cause unnoticable damage. i change mine every year...or with my tune ups, or when i have the money and i feel like it.

Always.s change it on a regular basis ,,like every six month,s,,if you live on a dusty road, then change it more often,,as for how to tell when it need,s changed,,there are a couple of way,s to tell,,one is you can hold it up to the light ,,if you can still see light through it,,it is still good,,but at least change it every time you do a oil change on your car, this will keep it in good shape,,if you wait till your car start,s running bad to change it,,you have waited to long,,a good air filter is very important to the running condition of your engine,,it will help determine your gas mileage,,as well as how the car perform,s,,hope this help,s.

Take your air filter out and put it up against the sun. If you can see light, that means it's not ready to be changed yet. If you can't see it, change it. I just changed mine for the first time and it only cost me seven bucks for the filter. But the price varies with the type of car that you drive.

If you can see major debris around and inside it then change it. If you can hold it up to a bright light and light doesn't show through then change it. If you have a air compressor at home try blowing air through it and blowing all the dust out that helps alot and will prolong the life of your filter element.

It's a safe bet to change your vehicles air filter every other oil change (approx 6000 miles). If you don't change your vehicles air filter your gas mileage will suffer as will your vehicles performance plus eventually emission equipment will start malfunctioning and your vehicle could just quit at the worst possible time, for the price average $8.00-$12.00 it's foolish not to do it.

You car will not perform as well. It like running with a cold, you need to work harder to get the air in.

When you take it out hold it up to the light if you cant see any light coming through it you need a new one. If you do not replace when it needs to be replaced you will see reduced performance and poor fuel economy.

Change it on regular basis, once or twice a year, or once every 12,000 miles.
