my microwave bottom is16 inches above the range

High enough so that when you're cooking with the stove, it doesn't heat up the bottom of the microwave. I'd say no less than 2' but 2.5' - 3' is probably better. Cover the bottom with plastic (even a place setting mat) to prevent moisture from getting inside it when you boil water on the stove.

I would check with the manufacturer of the stove or the microwave. Calling a fire or home inspector and asking them might be a safe bet as well.
