The alternator is new just bought this morning. What could cause the alternator not to charge the battery?
The car is just running off the battery and when it dies the car dies too.

The old and new alternators were tested and are putting out the correct readings, but it's still not charging the battery.

It's a 1982 with the 4100 engine.

The car was running fine but it need a water pump. Once the water pump was put on, thats when it started this issue.

It all depends on what year of the eighties it was generated and if it is mister 4100(eng). I would take the control module in and have it tested at auto zone or advance. They do it for free and if the car starts off of two batteries(jump off). The control module is probably going bad and not receiving a voltage signal high enough for it to tell the engine to keep running after the jumper cables are pulled.

Sounds like the main wire coming from the alt. to the positive battery terminal is corroded or broken. It's pretty common for the wire to corrode, inside the insulation, and no longer be able to carry current. Pay particularly close attention to it at or near the battery terminal itself, as this is the most common place for corrosion due to battery acid fumes/residue. However, if your battery is new and properly charged, the engine should still run, as long as the battery voltage stays around 12v, even with-out an alternator. I suspect your battery isn't charged fully as well. Hope this helps

It does sound like it could be a fusable link. Check all links from the battery to the starter, also check all wires to be sure they got put back on and they are tight. It's something between the starter and the battery and the alternator for sure. Just keep looking there and you'll find a bad link, bad wire, or bad connection.

Your not getting charge from the alternator to the battery. check your wires. Also check your fuses and relays. Good Luck!

Has to be another bad alternator. I had to buy 3 in one month for '91 olds, the 3rd was the charm I guess. It don't cost anything to test it, but you have to take it out again.

It's gotta be electrical. Sounds like a bad connection. Clean all visible contacts along the ignition circuit. Trace it out with a DVM.
