It all boils down to money and apathy. The donkeys and elephants have the most financial support. Most other parties choose someone too "radical" for the mainstream.
Americans also don't really care to get involved or even informed about their politicians. Look at 2004, is the best this country can come up with to run the nation is John Kerry or George Bush? Two C students and complete retards when it comes to the Presidency. In Spain, where most parties are represented pretty evenly, there is a spot on the ballot which translates to "voting in white." That means that none of the douche bags represent your politics and you don't support any candidate. Sort of like voting for Nader.

Let me clear the misconceptions of the previous posts.
First and foremost, The media are not in control of the situation. To put it simply, politicians rarely want to put their full agenda out there, especially when the details of their plans are going to be attacked on national television. Putting their full agenda out there in detail could offend swing voters, could embarress them( it's being attacked) or could hurt them in other ways( no substance in plan, personal qualities, etc.) That said, the power brokers are the politicians. In fact, they make all the rules. Those debates are planned to the detail and have the most idiotic rules in existence. The only reason for the debates in the first place is to fulfill the demand of the public for a debate( what politician wants to go against such strong public opinion?)
The reason politicians do not put third candidates on the air with them is not because of the bottom line or some evil plot( remember Ross Perot debated on national t.v). The reason is because most other political parties have no chance at winning nationally and third party candidates take away votes( again ross perot). 3rd party candidates have little nation wide support. Only candidates who could possibly win can debate. Think about it, how bad would it look if two parties forced out a 3rd party candidate who pulls 30% support? It would make that 3rd party candidate look good, and that would be bad to the other parties. That said, 3rd party candidates are usually a waste of time and actually could hurt either party. Being a two party system, the U.S party system forces a lot of factions together who other wise would form hundreds of minor parties. Having a third party debate takes away some faction from a party that really does not really support that party. That means that party loses votes. Niether party wants that to happen.
That should straighten it out.

America recognizes many parties. Why doesn't the media give most of them the time of day? Probably not good for their bottom line. I wish they would. While the 'smaller' parties are usually to 'extreme' for the mainstream or don't really cover as many topics as a nationwide party should , they do offer some interesting points of view and could probably generate some good discussion.
No, Americans are not all blind.

Do you want to start another political party. Fine, there's no law against it. Your second question about air time. Our newspapers and television companies are in business to sell advertising time. Anyone can buy the time. The reason one candidate has more than the next is because that's the amount that he purchased.
Are Americans blind ? Nope, not me. I have 20-20 vision.

They give the air time to the candidates that can pay for it. The Dems and the Reps have the most money. . .
But Independants are getting some notice. It won't take long for the rest of america to get sick of the only 2 choices out there, and float elsewhere.

The United States was founded on the 2-party system, not a multi-party system. Americans are not blind, its all of you foreigners who are blind because you do not study our culture
or history.
