You need to know 1st aid and infant cpr. Know where the first aid kit is and a thermometer. Have all emergency phone numbers for the parents & relatives available. Play soft music and keep the baby relaxed. Ask the mom for a feeding/napping schedule so you can keep the baby on his/her normal schedule. Make sure the baby sleeps on his/her back. I would spend some time with the mom/baby before you babysit. That will give you a chance to see how they interact. You also should ask the mom or dad, how they handle it when the baby cries or fusses.

Trust me, I'm an aunt of a 2 year old, and when he was that young I had to a baby sit him everyday. I was 20 years old, and it was still a very hard job to do. Changing him, feeding him on time with the right amounts, changing his clothes when he spits up all over them, getting him to take a nap at the right times, burping him so he doesn't get a stomach ache, and watching him closely tomake sure he is laying correctly. If you have never done this before it is a very stressful job, and it is VERY important you know what you are doing. I suggest you get with the mother and learn a little bit more about taking care of a child that young and learning the ropes. Then decide if you are ready.

If you do not think you are ready to babysit a child this young do not do it. A 4-6 month old child needs a lot of attention and patience. Ask the baby's parents about any special needs, feeding times, etc. and you should be okay

I have a 5 month old son. First off I recomend asking the parents what his feeding times are, nap times, and favorite toys...i am a stay at home mom so i am around my son 24/7 and he mostly loves attention...like just talking to him, singing nursery rhymes, reading books, watching cartoons, or just getting on the ground and playing peek a boo or playing with a toy...just a note..my son is trying to put everything he can find in his mouth now...so be sure to keep small objects away from the baby. good luck!

I would take infant CPR classes and as many classes on babysitting as possible.
There are just too many things to worry about and I would dream of hiring someone w/o experience to take care of my four month old daughter.

Be prepared to tolerate a fussy baby. Babies this age have colic and occassionally are teething. Either way, if he/she is not eating or sleeping...he/she'll probably be crying. If you're unsure of yourself, don't take the job.
