I have never myself, "lived" in either Chicago or New York. Nevertheless, I drove truck for a number of years which put me direct "contact" with scores of people within each city, and this is my "observation": The "people" in Chicago are generally kind and friendly and even "helpful" people...and I NEVER had a "bad run-in" with anyone there. But in New York, the "people" (if you could actually find one to respond), was as though their heads' were "buried in the sand". They of New York were impatient, self-centered and often just "straight-up rude". Chicago has those too; but more often than not, the people there were kind and considerate and very helpful. Hope this helps a little or a lot. Be Good.

I wouldn't say Chicago is less dirty than New York. They're both pretty grimy. I lived in Chicago for a couple of years and loved it - it's more laid back than New York, but still has all the big-city stuff to offer. I love Chicago!

Chicago, hands down. I've been to NYC quite a few times and while i like the energy of the city, it's dirtier than Chicago, has a crappy transit system (the buses stop running in the late evening... what's up with that?) and it's actually five cities, not one, so you can't even make a true comparison. I mean, stop calling them "boroughs" and call them what they are... the city of Manhattan, the city of Brooklyn, the city of Queens, etc.
People who consider Chicago dirty have never really been to NYC. Because NYC has no alleys, they have to stack the garbage right on the front of the street, right at your front door! who want to see a huge pile of garbage the first thing in the morning... no wonder everyone is so pissed off there. I was in NYC a couple of years ago for a week and passed by the same piles of garbage when leaving my hotel every morning. How often to they collect garbage there???
But the people of NYC weren't as overall rude as people make them out to be. The people I met were nice. One guy even saved me from getting crapped on by birds that roost on these wires that are stretched out over the intersection. if you're standing there crossing the street, you may not know that there are birds right over your head. The sidewalks is covered with bird crap.
but anyway, as far as quality of life, Chicago wins.
