It was a classical violin-cello-interlude type thing. In each advert the main character always befell some unfortunate mishap; the music played whilst he lit up and an announcer solemnly informed us that "happiness is a cigar called Hamlet". You know the one I mean. Extra consideration given if anyone can also find out if it's possible to download the adverts, but I'd be happy enough to know the title of the theme tune ... and a guitar tab ;-)

If I remember well, it was by August Wilhelmj, a German violinist, and who in the 19th Century made an arrangement for the violin from an excerpt in the second movement of J.S.Bach's Orchestral Suite No. 3, known as Air on a G String.

Yes, it was the "Air on a G String", by JS Bach.

It is the second movement of the Orchestral Suite in D, B.W.V. 1068. Probably composed 1722-23. Scored for first and second violins, viola, and continuo.
