I have a really bad problem with procrastinating. I'm a grad student, so it's definitely bitten me in the butt on more than one occasion. It's so frustrating because I know that my work is really good when I take the time to do it, I just can't seem to make myself do it!!! And it's not just my work for school, I procrastinate in all kinds of things I need to do.. if I need to go to the DMV, I wait forever before I actually go. If I need to clean my apartment, I keep putting it off and putting it off until I can't stand it anymore!! In fact I'm procrastinating right now!! Help!!
Do you have tips that help you stop and get back to work? What's worked for you and what hasn't? Do you have tips on how to stick to a schedule?

Try making a list. If your no.1 priority is going onto the internet, then do it. Then move on to no.2, which might be picking your nose or something. Then move on to the third, fourth etc. , but ensure that you complete each task. This way, you will combine the things that you want to do and the things that you ought to do. You also get to treat yourself when you complete your daily list! However, do be realistic about the amount of things that you set yourself on a day-to-day basis. If it's just three, fairly heavy duty things and you complete them, then brilliant. If you miss a task, then carry it over to the next day, but make sure it's top of the daily list.
But most of all, don't beat yourself up about not doing stuff, it holds you back even more.

Procrastination can hurt your career and schooling. Your boss or teacher expects you to complete projects on time and to keep up with even the most tedious aspects of your job/schooling. Procrastination can keep you from doing your job well and leave your boss/teacher dissatisfied with your performance. Here are five things you can do to help you overcome procrastination
Reward Yourself for Not Procrastinating: Give yourself a small reward after you complete a boring task. If you know a coffee and cookie break is waiting for you when you are finished doing something tedious, you will be inspired to get it done.
Make Procrastination Unnecessary: You may put off a large project because it seems overwhelming. Break Large Projects into small chunks. Dividing a big job into a series of smaller tasks will make it seem less overwhelming.
Prioritize the Tasks That Cause You to Procrastinate: List the things you've been putting off from most to least important, or in order of when each item needs to be completed.
Don't Give Yourself an Excuse to Procrastinate: You may put off starting a task because you don't think you'll have enough time to finish it. For example you have ten minutes left until you can go home. Use the little time you have to do something that will only take a few minutes, such as putting away files. Before you know it, you will get all those short, annoying tasks done.
Find a "Procrastinating Buddy": Partner with a co-worker/fellow student who also procrastinates. Find tasks you both have that will take the same amount of time to do. Plan to meet for a cup of coffee or a short chat when you have completed those tasks.
Sometimes there are deep-seeded psychological issues that result in procrastination. If you try these techniques (or others) and are unsuccessful, maybe you need to seek counseling.

Make a to-do list for the week or the day, write deadlines and schedule study times in your calendar and look at those once you start your day and through out it several times. I tend to procrastinate a lot as well and I find that looking at my calendar and setting goals for a day really helps, I guess what it comes down to is organization especially in managing your time. Good Luck!!!

Hi Cynthia. This is a great question! At this very moment, I am not cleaning a very messy house to answer your question because I would rather be doing this than that. I should have been President of the Procrastinator's Club but I couldn't get there in time for the vote. Here is the BIG SECRET ANSWER: ACCEPTANCE. Accept that you are a procrastinator. Accept that what you are 'putting off' is something that you do not want to do at this moment. Forgive yourself for not wanting to do the task, whatever it is. DO whatever you want to do at this moment.
Give whatever you do at this moment the value that you give to the undone task. If it is laying around listening to music, painting, watering ther lawn, or absolutely nothing, it has value to you. That makes it the most valuable thing in your life at this moment. Everything is NOW. I ask my friends "what time is it?" and I answer them, "The time is now." If you can believe that everything we have is in the present moment, and that everything else is either in the past or the future (which we do not and will never have), then procrastinating will disappear. You will be doing exactly what you were meant to be doing at this moment. It is really very simple. Tell yourself it's ok. All we have is NOW. Enjoy your life. Every minute is priceless.
