Okay, there's a 17-week schedule (16 games, 1 bye week). Using the AFC North and the Steelers for example:
1. They'll play the other 3 teams (Bengals, Browns, Ravens) in their division 2 times, once at home and once on the road (for a total of 6 games).
2. Then, they'll play the 4 teams in one AFC Division, in 2006 it's the AFC West (Broncos, Chargers, Chiefs, Raiders).
3. Then 4 teams in an NFC Division, in 2006 it's the NFC South (Falcons, Saints, Panthers, Bucs).
4. The final 2 games are then based on the previous seasons record, in 2006 it's the Dolphins and Jaguars.
Also, the rest of the AFC North (Bengals, Browns, Ravens) have a similar schedule: they'll play the AFC West and NFC South, also, plus 2 more games based on their previous season's record.

the nfl schedule is based on division play. i'm a packers fan so i'll use our schedule as an example.
we'll have to play each team in the NFC North (our division) twice. that includes the bears, lions, and vikings. there's 6 games. then we'll play each team in two other divisions. in this years case, the AFC East (Patriots, Dolphins, Jets, and Bills) and the NFC West (Seahawks, Cardinals, Rams, and 49ers). We play each of these teams once. there's 8 more games, bringing our total to 14. Finally there are two more opponents that we dont play for any particular reason (Eagles and Saints). That's two more games for a grand total of 16 games.
Just for your info, the two divisions that a team plays rotates from season to season. there are 4 divisions in each confernce so for instance the packers would play the dolphins every 4 seasons.
Oh yeah, there are 17 weeks but only 16 games. each team has a bye week sometime during the season.
hope i didnt confuse you too much.

First, a team must play the other three teams in their division twice. Then, a team in a division plays each team in a division of the other conference once. Finally, a team plays one game each against six teams from two other divisions in their conference.
