I don't know is CA is different from where I had my baby but in most places you fill out forms for the birth certificate in the hospital. At some point before you are discharged they will give you all kinds of forms to fill out. The birth certificate will be mailed to you after everything is processed. I think it took about three weeks to get mine. If you have your baby at home its a little different, I think you have to go to a town clerks office.

when the child arrives a tthe hospital in ANY state before the mom can leave with the baby she has to fill out the birth certificate. The hospital will give you the papers and the papers for a social security # will all be done where the baby is born.
