Here are some factors.

1. Speed of BURNER
2. Speed of Media
3. Burner-Media compatibility
4. Available computer resources (close everything)
5. Size of files being burned.

If you are getting good DVDs every time you burn, then your troubles are insignificant. In the old days of burners, I found better success in slowing the burn process down to 4X. Gosh, it is a waste of time to have to BURN a second time.

I don't know what you are using as a burning software but a lot of times you can set the burn speed inside of the program. You should find out where you can change this and make it maximum then it will burn to the speed that the media allows 8x, 16x, etc. This setting is most likely in options or preferences menu of the software, but without knowing what you use it is hard to say exactly where the setting is but look around and you will most likely find it.

That's probably the max DVD burn rate of the drive.

I would imagine it depends on your burner and the amount of your ram.
