Well, I don't know how to tell if she's dying, but I know how to tell if she's dead...If she starts floating belly-up instead of swimming around, then she's a goner. Hope she's okay, though! :)

Betas have personalities and like attention. If you've left her alone or in a dark area for some time she may become depressed. Some solutions to this are getting a light for the tank and leaving it on for a normal day cycle, putting a male beta near the tank (so she can see him), or even just sitting next to the tank for a while.

Other problems hiding in the rocks can indicate is poor feeding (too much or little), pH or ammonia shock (change water more frequently or add a bubbler), and infection. For the last one hold a light up to her and look to see if her scales are sticking up on end. If so then she's passed the point of no return. I've lost 4 in this way.

To answer your question and to clarify some of the other responders' answers:

1) If your fish is just hovering at the bottom and only surfacing for air, it is probably ill. If the fins are looking crumbly or weird, then it probably has fin rot.

2) If your betta has been "hyper" - darting around a lot, and then crashing at the bottom to rest, it probably has parasites.

3) If you do nothing about these situations, your fish will die, probably within the week.

4) I would recommend checking out www.bettatalk.com. This breeder has saved my bettas! She sells a first aid kit that is absolutely PHENOMENAL and I would highly recommend to any fish owner (betta or otherwise).

I'm sorry to say but I think your fish may be dying. My betta did that before he died, then a week before it died it hung at the top ALL the time and wasn't eating.

She may be in season and looking for her mate. Have you got a male betta in with her? Clean her water, and introduce some brine shrimp, but a very small amount.

They usually move slowly,or stop eating, sometimes they are pale looking, and when my betta fish died he had large droppings of poop. And im serious they can die from not digesting there food properly or eating too much!!!! Oh yeah they can also die of being too hyper!!!!!!!
