Lack of adaquate healthcare, poor leadership...
I've seen on the news that much food and supplies sent from charities around the world don't go directly to those who need it, but corrupted government officials who sell them for a profit. Also, I find it wrong that so many are dying on the streets but the leaders of the countries have huge homes and spend most of their time vacationing around the globe.

There are many waring factions such as warlords that infuence or even controle food supplies. In the early 90's, the US sent millions of dollars in aid to Samalia, but the warlords were stealing the aid from the people that it was ment for. The US was not allowed to protect the innocent people due to international law, even though several countries demanded that the US do something. Finally, when the US was given permission to do something, the battle lasted for 3 days, and many of the countries that originally condemed the US for not doing anything, started condeming the US for finally doing something. Many parts of Africa are politicly unstable, and this is part of the reason the African poverty continues.

Like you said it is a large continent. In addition to all the other causes stated above most of Africa that is starving is and has been Muslim and just like in the Mideast progress is stifled, education is limited to the Koran and women are oppressed and not allowed to participate since the Europeans left. Racism is also a cause. White people have been driven out of much of sub-Saharan Africa, taking with them their management skills, education, etc. Many of the areas that are starving now were farm areas producing enough food for population and for export like Rwanda. Communism is also a cause. Private property, especially that owned by whites, has been confiscated in many areas of Africa. Promiscuity. Aids is taking a tremendous toll on people of working age, largely because STD's like gonorrhea go untreated. This makes Aids a heterosexual disease.

National Geographic did a story, long ago, which showed that Africa was not always a desert country. Animals stripped trees of foliage and people chopped them down. Remember, America had a "dust bowl" too until we began to conserve and reforest the land. Africa will have to restart from way behind, and maybe driving out successful farm owners because they were white has not been such a good idea.

The actual answer to question is quite long, but I'll try to sum it up. The first and foremost issue is the climate of the majority of Africa. Long droughts and very hot temperatures lead to a difficult growing season. Another big part of this is the government in most African countries is very corrupt and unstable leading to weak social services and farming subsidization. The unstable political mood in the country leads to stifled technological advances which decreases the chance of solutions to the overall issue.

No jobs, and it's so sad. This morning I was watching the children and adults in Africa on TV, starving and I cried a bit. Just looking at thier faces makes you want to go and help. My heart goes out to all the families.

Government corruption, civil war, lack of education, ignorance, HIV. The list is pretty long. This answer is very bare bones, because you could go on for hours. Until there is peace throughout Africa, and until people are educated, hunger will continue unabated and people will continue to die needlessly.
