I am 34 yo woman, just divorced with no kids. I am tired living in Florida and do really want to move to Chicago. Does anyone knows where is the best area in/near Chicago to live, affordable rent & safe? I read about many cities in Chicago area but I don't know which one is really the best. Also anyone knows a bakery or cake shop that need a Cake decorator? Thanks for your help.

If you can afford it "The Gold Coast" all the best restaurants in Chicago are right there-there is easy access to the magnificent mile and the loop and very low crime rate.

When looking at places to live in the city...North is always better than South.

Depends on what you considerable affordable. your price range determines where you can live, of course. There are some good places in the Edgewater araa where I live. It's an up and coming area that is a mix of rental apartments and condos. There are new restaruants opening up and a new bakery cafe (Flourish) just opened up (http://local.yahoo.com/details?fr=dd-local-tl3&id=34114978&stx=flourish&csz=Chicago+IL&ed=ftx9Nq160SxSf_MjLFLTw9R3ohQYlQ8NfTPRaWTybM6oUErzdAPosMQaMw3OWCPgBEjS1Qa3s6iDo.Q-), which incidentially might be a good place to look for work.

Rent in Edgewater varies but you can find a decent one bedroom for about $650-850. It's a mixed neighborhood with black, white, latino, asian, indian (both native and East), etc. It has a substantial gay population and is one of the headquarters for the Gay Game currently going on in Chicago. It's close to the lake so on hot days you can just pop out of your apartment and head down to the beach or take a run or ride on the bikepath. Here's some Wikipedia info on the neighborhood (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edgewater_(Chicago))

Rogers Park, a little north of Edgewater, is about the same as far as rent and population. It's a little more artsy than Edgewater because it used to be the "hippie" neighborhood. Most of those folks have grown up and moved away, but the vibe lingers on with indie coffeeshops, storefront theaters, community jazz fests, Art and music fairs by the lake, etc.

If your looking for more "upscale" living, try Lakefiew, Roscoe Village, Wickerpark/Bucktown. These are neighborhoods where the "young urban professionals" are living. The rents cost more, of course.

use the Chicago Readers' apartment guide (http://classifieds.chicagoreader.com/chicago/Results?section=oid%3A8&) to find an apartment in your price range. Then once you find one, look on line for info on the neighborhood. Or ask someone here.

I live in Chicago. Lakeview is a good area but, it's expensive. In my opinion some of the safest areas are north Chicago and northern suburbs, Evanston, Skokie, Wilmette etc. The only other problem you might face coming from Florida is the winter weather. It can get dangerously cold here!

Naperville. Its a suburb of Chicago and has a great school district, etc. Its being voted near the top on best places to raise kids in lists.

The north side is overblown, overrated, overcrowded and horribly laid out.
Check south where you CAN own a car and park it, too.
Or the West side.

But stay away from the north side, unless you are gay.
