i know that the axle itself is different, but what about the housing is that different

no the 1 ton is what is called a floater which means you can remove the axle without removing the axle hub many off roaders will swap them in for rock crawling as the axles are quite a bit stronger mainly you need to check spring pads and track width but most will fit into a 1/2 ton chassis

Not even close. 1/2 ton axle housings are only about 1 inch in diameter. 3/4 ton and 1 ton are around 2 inches or more. If you want to change things, get a Dana 60 and replace the whole thing. Be safe...suspend the vehicle from above as well as using jack stands. Cut the old mount plates off of your 1/2 ton rear end and weld them onto the 1 ton rear end. Get it all straight. Good luck.

housing should be inch or so widre on 1 ton.leaf spring perches maybe out farther too.still fit with minor modifications.maybe hour or two to do everything and have it on the ground with wheels and tires.

yes the housing is different,,sometime,s they Will use the same seal,on some of them,,but as far as the rest it is all different,,hope this help,s.
