I was just told by my friend that when our daughters (nine years old) were playing together yesterday in her backyard jumping on the tramp and playing with the hose, that the girls had seen a snake. Then...the hose that was on started spelling out letters that said "You can give me eight snakes or one of you."

OK...so when I talked to my daughter about it she confirms the story. My daughter is really smart and not really super imaginative. Both of the girls are telling the same story...and NO neither one of them watches horror movies. We are religious...I don't know what the crap to make of this...what do you all think?

NO drugs! Mydad is a psychologist...I'm calling him next.

The hose was on really high and was squirming around apparently.

The girls were in the backyard alone.

Exactly how would a hose spell out these words? I mean, just for the sake of argument, let's say it happened. Did the hose spell them in the air? If so how could you read that with any certainty?
Do they claim it spelled these words on the ground? That would take up a lot of area and should have left some evidence.

I would not believe that this actually occurred. Instead I would examine what influences my child is exposed to. Nine yr olds can come up with some pretty good ones. You say that you are religious. What exactly does that mean to you? If this story freaked you out, then I would suggest that you study the scriptures so that you can gain a knowledge that will keep you from worrying about these childish things.

Hmmm.

Well, I am open-minded and never discount possibilities off-hand. And if the kid is good and normally does not make up such stories, that gives them more credibility.

But I will be honest: What seems more likely to you, that (1) they're just having fun together and imagining things (kids do that -- I have three around the same age), or that (2) somehow the hose actually came to life out of the blue and threatened to kill one of them if it was not offered eight snakes in their place?

The odds are pretty slim for the latter.

Kids can often convince themselves of something to be true, when they're playing. I can't quite remember the details of one, but the child was told that what they had been told (and came to believe during the study) was not true, the kid said he understood and no longer believed it... and then the next day went right back to the old belief.

[And we have so many cases where people were accused of abuse, whom later they discovered to be innocent. Some of those kids were good kids, but for whatever reason -- the psychologist leading them, or just fixating on an idea -- persisted in something that was not true.]

A kid doesn't have to be super-imaginative to make up a story like this. It sounds well within the range of an average kid.

If they were my kids, I would just let it go and not pursue it. Chances are, it was just an episode of fun between them, and they weren't doing anything wrong by pretending.

(But, because I am open to possibilities, I'd also tuck it away in the back of my mind, in case something similar happened in the future.)

I don't think you or your girls are being honest. How can nine year old girls keep up with a water hose spelling out words, much less sentences???? I'm not convinced sorry. But thanks for the 2 points.

And also who watches for the hose to start spelling out words???

I don't get it, how does a hose spell letters? What would a hose do with a child or one snake let alone eight.???

This seems hard to believe, so it could be psychological. If you see any more weird threats like this, you should go to the police or something. It could also be a prank. Try thinking rationally for now. I'm sure there's no problem. I hope there isn't.

They are either suffering from hysteria or they are making up stories.

The kids in Salem Massachucetts were all religous and all told the same stories that turned out to be lies. Scores of people were hanged before they fessed up.

I would find out what DRUGS you are all on, or if a neighbour was spraying their yard with banned chemicals.
