The question shouldn'e be "how old one should be" the question(s) should be based on responsibility and maturity. I work with 40 and 50 year olds who don't deserve one, yet I've seen 7 and 8 year olds who have one and use it responsibly.

The questions:
Can you afford it, or if you don't have a job, do you have someone willing to pay for the bill (and you work it off, for example, with extra chores?).

Can you STOP when you reach your minute limit?

Can you not abuse the minutes, text messages, features etc?

Do you know how to use it respectfully? IN a resturant, store, library, hospital, when with friends etc..

Do you know how to treat the phone with respect (they're not indestructble!).

Do you have a basic understanding on how they work and what would cause it not to work?

You would think that working for a cell phone company taking calls from customers whose teenagers have racked up hundreds and in some cases thousands of dollars in bills, that I would be an advocate for no cell phones, but truly I feel that kids should have a mobile phone if they have proven themselves responsible enough to use them wisely. On top of being able to stay in touch with family, the cell phone is a wonderful way for kids to stay in touch with their friends. I do recommend an unlimited text messaging plan...You would not believe how spendy .10 a message can get when you add them all up. On the plus side, many companies offer a kid's plan. Take T-Mobile...for 19.99 a month, a parent can activate a KidConnect plan that gives 50 minutes a month, unlimited weekends, and unlimited Mobile to Mobile. The plan restricts the phone after 50 minutes so that it cannot go over, but you can charge up the minutes with pre-paid cards. It is a great way for parents to ensure that the kids are managing the minutes wisely without the gamble of a plan that allows for overage.

When you really need one.. you can get one.. Even if you are at the age of 13, if you stay away from your parents/family you might want to keep in touch, then having a phone is okay.. Don't buy it just because all your friends have one or you like electronic gadgets.. They will come and go..

At thirteen, you don't need one, and there is nothing saying you should have one. You are probably going into eighth grade. My eighth grade year, I found that it was important for me to be with someone that had a phone, but I did not necessarily need one my self.

However, you may also be going into high school. If you are, I am not going to say that you *need* a phone, but I would defiantly recommend getting one. I see people who constantly have to ask to use for other peoples phones, and people get annoyed with them. So all in all, it depends on what your situation is.

You're old enough to get a cell phone when you can afford to pay the bill on your own.

old enough to pay for it yourself. For lots of people, that is somewhere around age 40.
