Lack of self. We cling to what is comfortable or even just common in our lives for fear of the unknown. Modern society is no different in this way from our ancestors. Common knowledge gives us stability whilst the unknown factor shakes our lives up. When a loved one dies we are often inconsolable because we fear the unknown and feel left behind. Why not embrace the idea that we have so much more to look forward to no matter the change...You might truly find a better way after all. l

Because human beings are programmed on narrative structure.
Our stories, aka our lives, aka our histories, are supposed to have a beginning, middle and end.
If the narrative we have preprogrammed in our minds is "broken," meaning something has dramatically altered or contradicted the story we have told ourselves about the way the world works or our relationships with other people, it creates cognitive dissonnance (in normal language: it bothers us, and we keep replaying the story because it didn't make sense).
It's like watching a movie on tv and then the power goes out or the sound track switches to a different language. You know the movie is still going on, but you aren't a part of it, and you don't know what is happening. Very disturbing.
That's what therapy is about: rewritting a personal narrative in a way that will allow the person to continue on more productively, rather than continue to be stuck in the confusion of a broken story.

Women have a tendency to hold on because they want to be the peacemaker in all things. Once you have sacrificed so much of yourself, it is hard to let go and face the reality that things are over.

Idk. Some people can't let go of the things they once had. Maybe its insecurity or maybe they don't want to lose memories of a better time.
